President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is set to launch his 2026 presidential campaign in Luweero District, a region closely tied to his rise to power. According to an inside source in the NRM secretariat, he will be heading there to officially kick off his campaign following his nomination
Luweero, north of Kampala, was the base of the National Resistance Army (NRA) during the Bush War of 1981–1986, where Museveni waged a guerrilla struggle against Milton Obote’s government.
The support of the civilian population in this war proved decisive, leading to the NRA’s capture of Kampala and Museveni’s ascent to the presidency in January 1986.
Since then, Luweero has remained a symbolic starting point for Museveni’s election campaigns, often referred to as the cradle of the National Resistance Movement (NRM).
By returning to Luweero to begin his 2026 campaign, Museveni seeks to reaffirm his enduring connection to the region and consolidate support in a place that has defined his political journey.
Earlier on Tuesday, 23rd September, 2025, Museveni was officially nominated by the Electoral Commission to contest in next year’s presidential elections.
The nomination took place at the Commission headquarters in Lweza-Lubowa, where Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama confirmed that Museveni had fulfilled all requirements, including the submission of signatures and documentation. As part of the protocol, the Commission also provided him with a security vehicle.
Following the nomination, Museveni thanked NRM members for their trust, citing peace, infrastructure, and economic growth as key achievements of his government.
“Doubling GDP in one term is not easy, but this is what we have achieved,” he said.
The NRM flag bearer pledged to focus his next term on expanding education, roads, health, and security.
“This term I will focus on Education and offer free education for the poor, Roads, Peace and Security, and Health,” he said, further promising to improve access to safe water in villages.
On security and corruption, Museveni noted that while Uganda enjoys peace and stability that cannot allow a return to war, crime and corruption remain challenges.
“We shall fight crime, and we shall also fight corruption,” he vowed.
The Electoral Commission has announced that campaigns will officially run from 29th September 2025 to 12th January 2026, following a harmonization meeting with all candidates or their agents scheduled between 25th and 27th September.
As Museveni seeks a seventh term in office, he has framed his candidacy around consolidating peace and stability, fighting corruption, and moving Uganda from middle-income to High Middle-Income Status with Luweero once again serving as the symbolic starting point of his campaign trail.
