The Ministry of Works and Transport has announced brief traffic delays at Katonga Bridge as the installation of precast girders begins on Tuesday, November 11, 2025.

According to the ministry, the works are scheduled to continue until November 21, 2025, running daily between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon, and again from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

In a statement issued on Monday, November 10, 2025, the ministry cautioned motorists to expect slow movement during the operations due to the size and weight of the girders being lifted across the road carriageway.

“Precast girder installation poses a safety risk to traffic flow because the beams are extremely heavy and large, requiring slow movement and crane lifting across the road carriageway,” the ministry said.

Motorists have been urged to follow traffic guidance and exercise patience as the works proceed.

The ministry apologized for any inconvenience caused and expressed appreciation for the public’s cooperation as milestones on the bridge project move forward.

The reconstruction of Katonga Bridge is part of the government’s broader effort to upgrade and climate-proof national road infrastructure, particularly roads prone to flooding.

The bridge works follow severe flooding in May 2023 that washed away sections of the structure, disrupting transport between central and southwestern Uganda for several weeks.
