Youth leaders in Rukungiri District under the National Resistance Movement (NRM) are making strategic moves to amplify their political voice and attract national attention to the pressing challenges facing young people in the district.
Their latest step involves seeking an audience with the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among, to discuss issues affecting youth and advocate for increased support from top national leaders.
The call was made by Levi Tumukunde, popularly known as Napoleon, who chairs the NRM Youth League in Rukungiri. He made the appeal during a meeting with district delegates held at Riverside Hotel in Rukungiri Municipality.
The delegates were engaging with the campaign team of Hon. Anita Among, who is contesting for the position of 2nd National Vice Chairperson (Female) within the NRM party.
Tumukunde noted that youth in Rukungiri have long been left behind, largely due to the district’s history of opposition-led leadership, particularly under the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).
He argued that this political alignment had limited the district’s access to key development programs, unlike neighboring districts in the Kigezi and Ankole sub-regions where the NRM has maintained firm leadership.
“Those districts clearly enjoy more support and visible progress,” Tumukunde said. “Rukungiri has missed out on many youth focused opportunities simply because our leadership was in opposition hands.”
With the youth leadership in Rukungiri now firmly under the NRM, Tumukunde emphasized that the time is ripe to engage national decision makers.
“This is the right moment to involve key stakeholders, including President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and Rt. Hon. Speaker Anita Among, to ensure that Rukungiri is prioritized in youth-centered initiatives,” Tumukunde the NRM Youth League in Rukungiri stated.
He added that such engagement would not only empower young people but also strengthen the NRM’s grassroots structures and visibility in the district.
“It will also send a strong message to the opposition that the NRM delivers real, tangible results and is truly committed to inclusive development,” he said.
As youth leadership in Rukungiri shifts under the NRM, the call for stronger national engagement marks a turning point. It signals a renewed push for inclusion, opportunity, and progress.
With a clear strategy to advocate for their district and mobilize local youth, these leaders are positioning themselves not merely as recipients of support, but as active agents of change shaping Rukungiri’s future.
