Retired Bishop Elia Paul Kizito Luzinda has asked the government of Uganda to consider providing medical insurance for older people, saying the financial support they receive is not enough to meet their healthcare needs.

Bishop Luzinda said the UGX 25,000 given to elderly people should be complemented with medical insurance to help them access medicines and live healthier lives.

“When they have medicine, they will live a healthy life. Let the government look through it,” he said.

The Bishop made the remarks at St. Paul’s Cathedral Namirembe on September 17th, 2026, during a thanksgiving service to mark his 81st birthday, 15th wedding anniversary and years of service to the Church.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, in a message delivered by Lands Minister Judith Nabakooba, commended Bishop Luzinda for 42 years of service, saying his longevity and contribution to the Christian community were a testimony of God’s grace.

“His promises for long life have come to pass in your life and special abilities that are rare upon common people, you have experienced during your tenure of service as a servant of God,” he said.

Bishop Luzinda was ordained in December 1984 and later became the third Bishop of Mukono, serving in the position until his retirement in 2010.

The President also recognised his contribution to the Church and country, particularly his role in raising a God-fearing generation and serving communities beyond the pulpit.

The thanksgiving service also saw Bishop Luzinda and his wife, Florence Wanyana, renew their marriage vows in a ceremony led by Archbishop Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu.

Bishop Luzinda thanked God for sustaining him through 81 years of life, 16 years of retirement and 15 years of marriage.
