The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has launched a nationwide endorsement campaign for its chairman, the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, saying he will stand for president.
Addressing journalists at a press conference on Tuesday, September 1st, 2026, at the Office of the National Chairman on Kyadondo Road, Daudi Kabanda said he was speaking on behalf of General Muhoozi, who had been unable to attend after receiving another call.
Kabanda described the occasion as historic and said a signed book would be used to record supporters across the country. He announced that PLU would organise endorsement rallies in all 146 districts, with local committees collecting signatures in each sub-county before the books are presented at larger rallies.
“The journey has started now,” Kabanda said, adding that those present would be regarded as historical members of the movement.
He also sent condolences to the people of Tooro following the death of their king, who was 34 years old, and asked those present to observe a moment of silence.
On relations with Rwanda, Kabanda asked government spokesperson in Rwanda to refrain from comments that could drag the two countries into conflict.
He said businesses and family ties had suffered when the border was previously closed and credited General Muhoozi with helping to reopen it after talking to President Paul Kagame.
Kabanda recounted General Muhoozi’s military service, including operations in Teso and other parts of the country, and said the Patriotic League had grown from earlier support networks around the general.
He noted that some officials had previously distanced themselves from the movement but that support had since expanded.
He urged supporters to organise orderly rallies and submit formal requests for approval so that endorsement events could be held successfully across Uganda.
Kabanda said the goal was to mobilise the widest possible support and maintain a clear record of those who endorse General Muhoozi from the beginning of the campaign.
