Oboth Elected Speaker, Tayebwa Retains Deputy Speaker Role in Uganda’s 12th Parliament

The decisive victories reaffirm the dominance of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) in Uganda’s parliamentary leadership as the country ushers in a new legislative term.

Jacob Marksons Oboth has been elected Speaker of Uganda’s 12th Parliament after a commanding victory in the parliamentary leadership elections held on Monday, May 25th, 2026, at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala.

Thomas Tayebwa also secured another term as Deputy Speaker in a separate major win.

The function was presided over by the Chief Justice, HW Dr. Flavian Zeija and Rt. Hon. Jacob Marksons Oboth respectively, and witnessed by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and hundreds of legislators.

Oboth, the Member of Parliament for West Budama County South in Tororo district on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) ticket, polled 441 votes out of 519 ballots cast, defeating Paul Mwiru of the National Unity Platform (NUP) party, who garnered 60 votes, and Democratic Party’s (DP) Norbert Mao, who secured 15 votes. Three ballots were declared invalid.

Moments after the announcement of the results, Oboth took the oath of office, officially becoming Speaker of the 12th Parliament and presided over the elections of the deputy speaker.

In the Deputy Speaker race, NRM’s Tayebwa rose to victory with 457 votes, comfortably beating Asnas Nakato of PFF, who received 45 votes, and UPC’s Sarah Aguti, who polled 14 votes. Three ballots were invalid.
