London as Close as Kabale: What This Means for Uganda’s Tourism and Trade

Uganda’s new direct flight from Entebbe to London Gatwick is redefining international travel for Ugandans and opening up better opportunities for the country’s tourism industry.

In just eight hours, the journey to the UK capital is now comparable in time to a road trip from Kampala to Kabale.

For many, it is hard to believe that what once involved several days of travel can now be accomplished in less time than the usual road drive to southwestern Uganda.

The direct route, launched on May 18, 2025, and operated by Uganda Airlines, is expected to be a game-changer for Uganda’s inbound and outbound tourism.

With four weekly flights and service aboard the modern Airbus A330-800neo, the route provides seamless access to one of Europe’s busiest travel hubs.

This convenience is a major draw for international tourists, especially from the UK, a historically significant market for Ugandan tourism. Easier access means more visitors can experience Uganda’s world-renowned attractions: gorilla trekking in Bwindi, safaris in Murchison Falls, hiking in the Rwenzoris, and the cultural heartbeat of Kampala.

“This route brings Uganda within easier reach of millions of potential travelers. It reduces friction, boosts confidence in Uganda as a destination, and invites repeat visits,” Lily Ajarova, CEO of the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) said.

For Ugandans living in the UK, this development gives families lost time to reunite more frequently, celebrations can be attended without weeks of planning.

Beyond boosting arrivals, the route is likely to energize the entire tourism value chain; from hotels and tour operators to guides and souvenir shops. With more predictable and frequent arrivals, businesses can plan more effectively and cater to higher-end markets, including short-stay and luxury travelers.

Moreover, the route is expected to help in hosting more international conferences and events. As air connectivity improves, so does Uganda’s attractiveness as a MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) destination.

For many Ugandans, the sight of a homegrown airline touching down in London is more than just a logistical feat; it’s a symbol of national pride and forward momentum signalling Uganda’s emergence as a serious player in global aviation and trade.

With increased foreign investment, greater engagement with the diaspora, and improved access to international markets, the Entebbe–London connection is more than a flight path; it’s a strategic platform for Uganda’s economic resilience and global presence.
