KAMPALA: Over 90 Suspected Criminals Netted in Crackdown Operations

The police registered the operations as successful, with exhibits recovered and suspects charged and detained pending prosecution.

Intelligence-led operations conducted by police in Kampala have led to the arrest of 116 suspects in various areas engaging in criminal activities.

According to the police, most of the suspects were arrested in relation to criminal activities, including marijuana trade and smoking, burglaries, and thefts in the areas around the city center.

In a statement released by Uganda police on November 27, 2024, Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, said that in one of the operations carried out on November 26, 2024, in Kitintale, Port Bell, Luzira, Kifuufu, and Gulf areas, 19 suspects were arrested.

The operation, according to Onyango, was conducted in other areas of Kira division, Mukono, and other areas where 97 other suspects were arrested for similar criminal activities.

“Kira Division, 30 suspects were arrested in possession of opium; in Mukono, 47 suspects were arrested in possession of marijuana and other crimes while at Central Police Station, Kampala, 20 suspects were arrested for engaging in various criminal activities,” Onyango said.

The police registered the operations as successful, with exhibits recovered and suspects charged and detained pending prosecution.

Onyango explained that the police’s duty remains to maintain public safety and order, especially during the upcoming Christmas festival.

A recent operation on November 20, 2024, led to the arrest of six individuals linked to a gang known for using pangas (machetes) in their crimes. This operation was initiated based on the police’s reliable intelligence regarding the thugs’ activities. During the arrests, police recovered two motorcycles and several mobile phones used in their operations.
