“It is illegal for private individuals to install sirens or use escort vehicles to force their way through traffic. The right of way is only provided for the State motorcade, the Vice President, the Prime Minister, the Speaker, the Deputy Speaker, the Chief Justice, ambulances and emergency military vehicles. Ministers do not have the legal right of way,” Kananura noted.

“The two drivers have since been charged with the relevant traffic offenses and are currently detained at Kampala CPS pending appearance before court and Police is working with the school management to ensure pupils are safely transported to their destination using appropriate means of transport,” Kananura said.

“From the bail application, applicant 1 Muwanga Kivumbi and 16 others have been granted bail Kivumbi has to pay a cash bail of 10 million Ugx and the 16 co-accused cash bail of 1 million Ugx, the other 6 applicants have been denied bail due to issues with their sureties” Hatanga said.

Kivumbi, the former Butambala County MP, and his co-accused are facing terrorism-related charges stemming from arrests made between January 2nd and 14th, 2026, in Butambala district. Their arrest followed a security operation at Kivumbi’s home during which more than seven people were reportedly shot dead.

The case could be related to the corruption scandals that hve been transpiring in Uganda’s Parliament that led to the former Speaker, Annet Anita Among’s property search and impounding of her cars by police.

Filmmaker Christopher Mogal Muchwa, who had previously filmed Gongondyo, called for greater community engagement and more effective use of storytelling to influence public attitudes.

Ultimately, the lesson from Gongodyo’s death is clear: justice cannot be delivered by an angry crowd. Uganda must strengthen public trust in law enforcement, promote civic education, and hold perpetrators of mob violence accountable. Only then can the country prevent similar tragedies and ensure that no innocent person loses their life simply because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.
