Buganda Congratulates Tooro’s New King Nyabongo I, Hails Centuries-Old Brotherhood
The Prime Minister of the Buganda Kingdom, Charles Peter Mayiga, has extended warm congratulations to the new Omukama of Tooro on behalf of the Kingdom of Buganda.
In a statement posted on his official X handle ahead of the coronation on Tuesday, September 29th, 2026, at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal, Mayiga promised to work with the new Tooro King to foster unity in between the two ancient kingdoms.
“On behalf of the Kingdom of Buganda, and on my own behalf, I extend our best wishes to Rukirabasaija Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I upon his accession to the throne of Tooro. We look forward to the unity and prosperity of the Kingdom of Tooro,” Katikiro Mayiga.
Buganda and Tooro’s centuries-old brotherhood and fraternity shall flourish for the good of their peoples and all Ugandans.
“May God’s light shine upon Tooro,” Mayiga noted.
Owek. Mayiga’s message comes as Tooro formally installs Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as His Majesty Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, Omukama w’Obukama Bwa Tooro.
Prince Kijanangoma was selected on September 9th by the 21-member Ababiito Royal Clan succession committee headed by Omujwera Musuuga Charles Kamurasi Akiiki at Karuziika Palace, and his selection was subsequently endorsed by the Tooro Supreme Council, the Rukurato Rw’Obukama Bwa Tooro, during its September 15th, sitting at Muchwa.
He succeeds his cousin, Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who died on August 27th, 2026, at the age of 34 after a reign that began in 1995.
The Government of Uganda has affirmed that the succession followed Tooro’s traditional procedures and is processing formal recognition in the Uganda Gazette under Article 246 of the Constitution.
Owek. Mayiga noted that Buganda and Tooro, both belonging to the Babiito-Baganda historical lineage, share deep cultural ties and a joint responsibility to promote unity, culture and development in Uganda.
However, the coronation of Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as Omukama Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, that has occurred on September 29th, 2026, at Karuziika Palace, has been weighed by some netizens as hanging in the balance following speculation that two subjects had petitioned the High Court in Fort Portal.
