Norway is mourning the end of an era after King Harald V, the country’s longest-serving monarch in recent decades and Europe’s oldest reigning king, died at the age of 89.
The Norwegian Royal Court announced his death on Friday, August 28th, 2026, the King died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital at 6:35 a.m. local time.
Harald’s death brings to a close more than three decades on the Norwegian throne, a reign that began in 1991 after the death of his father, King Olav V. He was 53 when he became king.
For many Norwegians, Harald was more than a ceremonial head of state. Over 35 years, he became a familiar and largely unifying figure, helping steer the monarchy into a more modern and approachable institution while maintaining its traditional role.
His reign spanned a period of significant change in Norway and included moments of national tragedy. He was particularly known for his public emphasis on openness, tolerance and the idea that the monarchy should remain connected to ordinary people.
Harald was born on February 21st, 1937, and his early childhood was shaped by the Second World War. When Nazi Germany invaded Norway in 1940, the young prince and members of his family went into exile in the United States before eventually returning home after the war.
His personal life also reflected the changing face of European royalty. In 1968, he married Sonja Haraldsen, a commoner, after a long relationship that had initially faced resistance from his father, King Olav. The couple went on to become one of Norway’s most recognisable royal partnerships.
Harald remained on the throne despite repeated health difficulties in his later years and did not follow several other European monarchs who chose to abdicate.
His final days had already prompted growing concern across Norway. On Thursday, August 27th, 2026, the Royal House said his health had deteriorated and described his condition as very serious, with members of his family gathering at his hospital bedside.
His death now triggers an immediate transition at the top of the Norwegian monarchy.
His son, Crown Prince Haakon, automatically succeeds him and becomes Norway’s new king.
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre paid tribute to Harald, describing his death as a moment of national mourning and praising the late monarch for his decades of service and his faith in the Norwegian people.
For Norway, Friday is therefore not simply the death of an 89-year-old king.
It is the closing of a royal chapter that began in 1991 and lasted more than 35 years, and the beginning of a new one under King Haakon VIII.
