Besigye, Lukwago Allegedly Transferred from Prison to Clinics in Kampala Over Deteriorating Health-PFF

However, the prison authorities have since revealed that the duo can still be treated in Uganda, stating that their current health state does not require specialized treatment from abroad, as alleged by the party leaders. Nevertheless, Kamara insisted that the High Court should release their leaders on bail and get the required medical attention.

The leaders of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), led by Bayiga Lulume, the interim Executive Chairman of the party, have alleged that their leaders, including Dr. Kizza Besigye and Erias Lukwago, were transferred from the Luzira and Murchison Bay prisons, respectively, to clinics in Kampala.

According to Dr. Nicholas Kamara, the party’s Western Region Vice Chairman, the prison officers secretly transferred both Besigye and Lukwago last Saturday, August 29th, 2026, from the prison to unknown clinics in Kampala over deteriorating health conditions of the duo.

“Last Weekend we learnt that Lukwago was transferred from Luzira Prison to a certain clinic in town. We were also surprised that in the same weekend our Besigye was also transferred from Luzira to the clinic in town because the health teams in the prisons couldn’t manage their situation,” Kamara said.

While addressing the media on Monday, August 31st, 2026, Kamara appealed to the government to grant Besigye a chance to travel to Switzerland and Lukwago to India to access specialized medical attention from their professional medical doctors.

“There is no need to rush the prosecution of the men whose health conditions are deteriorating each day. Let them go and secure their lives first before presenting them in court. Why does security struggle to manage Besigye and Lukwago? Can’t they follow the recommendations of the medical doctors at Mulago National Referral Hospital?” Kamara asked.

According to Lulume, after conducting medical examinations on Besigye and Lukwago, medical doctors at Mulago recommended that Besigye should be allowed to travel to Switzerland and Lukwago to India for further management of their health conditions.

However, the prison authorities have since revealed that the duo can still be treated in Uganda, stating that their current health state does not require specialized treatment from abroad, as alleged by the party leaders. Nevertheless, Kamara insisted that the High Court should release their leaders on bail and get the required medical attention.

Meanwhile, the treason trial of Ugandan opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye and his co-accused, Hajj Obeid Lutale and UPDF Captain Denis Oola, is currently underway at the High Court in Kampala before Justice Emmanuel Baguma, though proceedings have faced severe boycotts and legal friction.

Besigye was arrested in Nairobi, Kenya, in November 2024. Authorities accused him and co-accused individuals of holding clandestine meetings and trying to buy weapons from foreign contacts in Geneva, Athens, and Nairobi to overthrow Uganda’s government.
