The Uganda National Drug Authority (NDA), through post-market surveillance, has discovered and warned the general public against fake and unauthorized Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccines on the market.

This was revealed in a press statement by the National Drug Authority, dated February 7, 2024.

The NDA identified the fake and unauthorized vaccines as Purified FMD Fotivax Foot and Mouth Disease Inactivated Vaccine and National Veterinary Institute Foot and Mouth Disease Broad Spectrum Vaccine.

According to the authority, the products have not undergone the NDA’s approval process, and their safety, quality, and efficiency are not guaranteed.

“FMD vaccines are solely procured and imported by the government through the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries (MAAIF) and distributed by district local governments via district veterinary officers,” the NDA said.

The NDA also urged the public to remain vigilant and to report anyone suspected of involvement in drug-related crimes.

FMD in Uganda was first confirmed in 1953 and since then, several control measures have been applied. Currently a total of 36 districts have been placed under quarantine restriction till the
country receives FMD vaccine.
