Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Katonga Faction, and the National Unity Platform (NUP) have boycotted receiving the body of a political legend and MP Atat Cecilia Ogwal, which was received at Entebbe International Airport on Sunday, January 21, by the Speaker of Parliament and other dignitaries.
The Dokolo District Woman MP Ogwal passed away in India on January 18, 2024, and her body was returned to Uganda aboard Fly Emirates on January 21, 2024.
Rt. Hon. Anita, Among, the Speaker of Parliament, Government Chief Whip, Denis Hamson Obua, ministers, legislators, and a team from the FDC Najjanankumbi faction led by Secretary General Nandala Mafabi and Treasurer, Geoffrey Ekanya, attended the function.
Whereas the FDC Najjanankumbi faction made a strong delegation, only Alice Alaso from the FDC Katonga faction appeared at the ceremony. There was also no representation from the NUP during the ceremony to receive Ogwal’s body.
At her residential home in Bugolobi, a team of mobilizers wearing FDC party T-shirts purporting to be from the Najjanankumbi faction were seen actively engaging in domestic work to support the family.
While receiving the body, Nandala Mafabi appreciated the former leader, saying she served her country diligently and correctly. He said MP Ogwal was a daring political leader who would confront any actions against the citizens of Uganda.
Geoffrey Ekanya, said he was inspired into politics by the late Ogwal several years ago and had been lucky to serve in the same Parliament and FDC party leadership with her together.
While at Entebbe International Airport (Cargo), where the body was received, Alice Alaso, the only ally of the FDC Katonga faction, was cited.
Speaker Among thanked President Museveni for granting the fallen leader a state burial, adding that her body will lie in state (Parliament) on Monday, January 22, 2023.
The fallen MP, Ogwal, was a renowned FDC leader whose contribution dates back to 2006, when she officially abandoned the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party.
The 77-year-old legislator will be laid to rest on Saturday, January 27, 2024, in Alito Sub County, Kole District.
