Jose Mourinho and his coaching staff have left AS Roma with immediate effect following a string of poor results that saw Roma finish ninth in the Serie A table.

The owners, Dan and Ryan Friedkin, thanked Mourinho for his passion and efforts, noting that his departure is a necessity for immediate change in the club.

During his 17-month tenure at Roma, Mourinho displayed flashes of brilliance, including leading the Giallorossi to their first European title in 51 years. However, inconsistency and injury-related absences strained the team even more.

The club’s recent 3-1 loss to AC Milan served as the final straw, prompting the decision to fire the manager.

The 60-year-old Mourinho was appointed Roma coach in May 2021 and guided the Italian team to a Europa League final win a year later. Last year, Roma and Mourinho also reached the Europa League final but lost on penalties to Sevilla.
