The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) enforcement alert unit has intercepted a truck loaded with second-hand assorted smuggled goods estimated at USD 31,757 million and an estimated tax element of UGX 98,023,588 million.

Following an intelligence report, the URA enforcement unit intercepted a smuggler at Maya, about 21 kilometers from Kampala, on November 3, 2023, at 4:00 a.m.

“URA enforcement team intercepted a truck registration number UBA 859X loaded with a heavy consignment of contraband used second-hand goods estimated at USD 31,757 million,” the URA enforcement team said.

The team added that when the smuggler was pressed for documentation of the shipment, he provided a transit declaration with the reference number D.2305 coming from Rwanda headed to south Sudan.

However, URA noted that the equivalent declaration to South Sudan from Uganda was not available.

“On examination of the consignment, it exposed 285 bales (73.4 kg) of used clothes and 248 bales (23.8 kg) of used shoes with a total cost of insurance and freight (CIF) at risk of USD 31,757 million,” URA said.

URA warned that such high risks only increase heavy losses, and people should refrain from smuggling.

The goods are being kept at the Nakawa URA office for further offense management.
