Cabinet has approved the establishment of a public university in Busoga sub-region in Eastern Uganda, which will be named Iganga University.
Justine Lumumba Kasule, the Minister of ICT and National Guidance confirmed the development on October 6th, 2026, while addressing members of the Press on resolutions made by cabinet in the last two weeks.
“After discussing the proposal to establish Busoga University as a public university, Cabinet decided to name it Iganga University,” Lumumba said.
The Minister of ICT said that Cabinet authorized the Ministry of Education and Sports to work with the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs to prepare the legal instrument needed to establish the public university.
Lumumba stressed that Namasagali University will be a constituent college of the Iganga university for marine and fisheries department, and the university will include all other inherited campuses in the region.
“Busoga University had a campus in Bugiri, a campus in Namutumba, Gabula- Kamuli and a campus in Jinja. All those are going to be incorporated because land was already handed over to government,” Lumumba added.
Cabinet also resolved that the Ministry of Finance Planning and Economic Development provide over UGX 89 Billion to establish Iganga University and enable it to operate.
Iganga University now joins other public universities in the country including Busitema University, Gulu University, Kabale University, Kyambogo University, Lira University, Makerere University, Makerere University Business School, Mbarara University of Science and Technology, Mountains of the Moon University, Muni University, Soroti University, Uganda Management Institute and Karamoja Peace and Technology university Project.
