Mary Kuteesa Kamuli, the Minister of State for Gender and Cultural Affairs has confirmed the succession process to install His Majesty Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I as Omukama of Tooro Kingdom, following established customary, constitutional, and statutory procedures.
According to the statement issued on September 24th, 2026, the succession followed the Tooro Kingdom’s traditional institutions and customs, while the ministry responsible for culture has been processing the formal publication of the new Omukama in the Uganda Gazette under the Institution of Traditional or Cultural Leaders Act, 2011.
The statement stated that the process for the transition and formal recognition of the new Omukama has been satisfied, with the ministry handling the required Gazette publication.
The coronation of Omukama Nyabongo I is scheduled for September 29th, 2026, at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal City.
The minister described the ceremony as an important cultural occasion for Tooro and Uganda, saying it will celebrate the continuity of the Obukama Bwa Tooro and the Kingdom’s contribution to preserving Uganda’s cultural heritage, identity, values, and unity.
Kamuli also called on all stakeholders to ensure that the coronation is conducted peacefully and respectfully, in accordance with the Constitution, the law, and the customs and traditions of the people of Tooro.
According to the statement, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has informed the people of Tooro that he will honour their invitation and attend the coronation.
The minister further encouraged the new Omukama and institutions of the Kingdom to promote Tooro’s cultural heritage, unity, dignity and social development while operating within Uganda’s laws.
She called on the media to provide accurate, responsible, and balanced coverage of the coronation and related cultural activities.
