Police in Kagadi District have launched search and rescue operations following a tragic canoe accident on River Nguse, where an estimated 35 to 40 passengers were on board when the vessel capsized on Tuesday night.
The incident occurred at around 8:30pm in Kyaleni Village, Pachwa Town Council, sending passengers into the water under unclear circumstances. Authorities say the exact number of those missing remains unconfirmed due to the absence of a passenger manifest.
One survivor, identified as Byaruhanga Tumuhaise, 27, a resident of Kyaleni, has so far been accounted for, as emergency teams continue to comb the river for other victims.
Marine Police units are leading the ongoing rescue efforts, with support from local authorities and residents. An investigation has also been opened to establish the cause of the accident.
Preliminary findings point to possible factors including overloading of the canoe, travel during night hours, and the general condition of the vessel.
Police have urged relatives of individuals who may have been on the canoe to report to Kagadi Central Police Station to assist in identification and rescue efforts.
Further updates are expected as the operation continues.
