The Government of Uganda has confirmed that construction works on the Katonga Bridge are in their final phase, with the project expected to be completed and opened to traffic within the coming weeks.

The Minister of State for Works and Transport, Hon Musa Ecweru, on Monday, February 7th, 2026, inspected progress at the site and said the project remains fully financed by the Government of Uganda.

He told journalists in Katonga that the contractor is working within schedule to restore normal movement along the key transport route.

Ecweru said the next stage of work will involve blocking the remaining section of the river to allow diversion of water through completed channels under the new bridge structure.

According to him, this will restore proper water flow while making it possible to reopen the road to motorists.

“What is happening at the site today is that in the next few weeks the contractor will block the remaining part of the river and create a diversion. The channels that have already been completed will allow normal flow of water through the bridge, which will then enable normal movement of vehicles. The public will be able to have normal traffic,” Ecweru said.

The contractor, alongside ministry officials, assured the public that the bridge will be delivered within the set timeline.

The reconstruction follows heavy rains that destroyed the old drainage structures at Katonga, cutting off sections of the Kabulasoke–Villa Maria road and disrupting transport and trade.

The damage made it difficult for both passenger and cargo vehicles to use the route, affecting movement of goods and services in the area.

Ecweru explained that the ongoing works include improved drainage systems designed to withstand future flooding and prevent a repeat of the destruction that crippled the corridor.

Once complete, the bridge is expected to restore easy movement of goods and services which will boost business and development in the areas and communities around the bridge.
