The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially cleared election observers to move across the country as preparations intensify for the forthcoming elections.
During a briefing held at the EC Headquarters today, Monday, January 12th, 2026, Justice Simon Byabakama, EC Chairperson, outlined their key roles and areas of focus.
He explained that the observers are tasked with monitoring voter access to polling stations, compliance with procedures by polling officials, the conduct of party agents, treatment of vulnerable groups such as women, youth, the elderly, and persons with disabilities, and the transparency and integrity of all processes, including vote counting and tallying.
“Observers are encouraged to use the official checklists and reporting tools provided upon accreditation, submit preliminary findings to the EC or designated coordination centers, and ensure that any public statements follow institutional protocols and national laws,” Byabakama said.
According to Byabakama, observers are required to carry accreditation tags at all times and report incidents through established channels, including district election administrators.
Inspector General of Police, Abas Byakagaba, assured the public that security will be maintained around polling stations and emphasized that voters should not be intimidated in casting their ballots freely.
Justice Byabakama also confirmed that the EC will tally results from districts and cities and declare the elected president within 48 hours after polls close.
The National Tally Center has been designated at the EC Headquarters grounds on Plot 2508, Lubowa Kigo Lweza Road, Makindye Ssabagabo Municipal Council, Wakiso District.
Tallying is scheduled from Thursday, January 15, 2026, after 4:00 pm, until Saturday, January 17, 2026, before 4:00 pm, with access limited to accredited media personnel, observers, and agents of political parties and independent candidates.
Meanwhile, active campaigning is expected to end on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, in line with EC regulations.
