Ministry of Works and Transport (MoWT) has confirmed that heavy trucks and trailers must continue using alternative routes, even as a temporary detour on the Karuma–Kamdini Road opens to light vehicles.
In a statement issued on 30th November 2025, the Ministry spokesperson, Allan Ssempebwa announced that construction of the temporary diversion at the affected section along the Karuma-Kamdini Road is now complete.
“As a result, beginning Monday, 1 December 2025 at 11:00am, light-traffic vehicles including buses, medium trucks, vans and saloon cars will be allowed to safely cross the section using the newly completed detour,” Ssempebwa posted on X.
However, the Ministry made it clear that heavy trucks will not return to the route yet.
“All heavy vehicles shall continue to divert through the Karuma–Olwiyo–Anaka route both from Kampala to Gulu and from Gulu to Kampala until further notice,” Ssempebwa said.
The continued diversion is expected to prolong transport times for cargo haulers who rely on the corridor.
Officials noted that with the new bypass operational, restoration works on the damaged main carriageway will commence immediately though no completion timeline was provided.
The Ministry also urged motorists to observe strict safety measures along the temporary passage.
“Motorists are advised to proceed with caution and follow all traffic management instructions including the 30Km/hr speed limit along the detour,” the statement read.
Until full repairs are completed, the Ministry is urging road users to remain vigilant and comply with all safety instructions along the diversion to avoid accidents and ensure smooth traffic flow.
