The Female Members of Parliament (MPs) from the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) party, who are in Shadow Cabinet have vowed to hold nationwide demonstrations if government fails to organize and hold LCI and women elections immediately after expiry of their term in office.

The remarks were made on Wednesday July 12, 2023, at Parliament when NUP MPs led by Ethel Naluyima-the Shadow Minister for Local Government, Brenda Nabukenya-the Shadow Minister for Education, Goreth Namugga-the Shadow Minister for Science and Technology were addressing the press.

According to MP Naluyima they have given government a 30-day ultimatum or else, they will organize citizens to demonstrate.

“We shall organize protests all over the country if our issue is not worked upon, because it’s their constitutional right to get elected leaders of their choice in office,” Naluyima said.

They argued that, Section 170 of the Local Governments Act provides that the Chairpersons, Local Councils and Administrative Councils shall be put into place.

MP Nakimuli, told government that ever since LCI term expired, citizens are facing it rough to receive public services especially, when court requires a  letter of introduction from the LCI Chairperson for bail application.

“Government should look for funds and organize LCI elections quickly because it’s where grass root leadership starts from,” she said.

The current LCI leaders were last elected in August 2018 and their term of office expired on Monday, July 10 2023.
