The race for the Nakawa East Constituency MP seat is underway despite challenges facing the National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate, Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, who is held at Luzira Prison.

On September 17, 2025, Mufumbiro was successfully vetted from Luzira Upper Prison to represent Nakawa East in Parliament, confirmed by his lawyer Jonathan Elotu.

Since then, he empowered his twin brother, Kenneth Kato Wilson, to lead all campaign activities on his behalf while they await approval from the party’s Elections Management Committee (EMC).

Mufumbiro, charged with inciting NUP supporters to violence and participating in illegal parades and meetings, emphasized during a bail hearing at Nakawa Magistrates Court today, Thursday,13th November,2025 that his detention is political persecution rather than a reflection of criminal conduct.

“Supporting Bobi Wine is not a crime. I am not a criminal, and I am not on trial, my liberty is. This is political persecution, and the judiciary is also being tested,” he said.

Despite his detention, Mufumbiro’s nomination was formally approved, and his campaign efforts continue through his brother Kenneth’s constituency mobilization.

Mufumbiro decried selective targeting by the state, contrasting his prolonged detention with the swift release of some police officers accused of assault.

He called on Ugandans to overcome fear and vote for NUP candidates.

“I will stand for what is right, I will stand for what is true, and I will make sure that this country gets back to the constitutional order,” Mufumbiro declared.

Mufumbiro faces competition from eight other aspirants including NRM’s Fredrick Ruhindi, PFF’s Micheal Kabaziguruka for the parliamentary seat of Nakawa East in the 12th Parliament.
