The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) Party President, Jimmy Akena, has broken his silence on the alliance with the ruling National Resistance Movement party.

Akena made this remark while appearing on NBS TV on Monday, July 10, 2023, during the morning Breeze talkback.

According to him, their engagement with the NRM party aims to calm down the political climate.

He adds that the alliance will also tackle questions of transition in Uganda.

“My thinking was that if we don’t talk across political lines when things are still relatively normal for Ugandans, what would happen if we ended up in another abnormal situation?” said Akena.

Akena, also the Lira City East Division MP, said this has been extensively discussed during various engagements under the Inter- Party Organization for Dialogue (IPOD).

“You should also sit down and discuss issues on how you are going to leave the futures of Ugandans and the politics of Uganda. We have discussed this in the framework of,” said Akena.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni recently congratulated UPC candidate Dr. Eunice Apio for winning the Oyam North County by-election, in which NRM candidate Junior Samuel Engola lost.

In his congratulatory message, President Museveni described UPC as a decent political ally.

“Congratulations to our allies, the UPC, and to the candidate, Eunice Apio, for winning the Oyam by-elections. Congratulations also to the NRM and the candidate, Engola Junior, because the difference between the two was very small,” President Museveni said.
