President of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Robert Kyagulanyi, has vowed to reinstate a two-term limit for Uganda’s presidency during a campaign rally at King George Grounds in Tororo.
Delivering his speech on Thursday, October 16, 2025, Kyagulanyi promised that under his leadership, Ugandans would never face more than two presidential terms, ensuring political stability and fairness.
He cautioned against the political repression that has marked Uganda’s recent history, vowing to end the arrests of opposition figures. He declared that under a NUP government, power would return to the people.
“No one will be President for more than two terms. No arrests of politicians of different ideas. No family rule,” he said.
Kyagulanyi warned that the current ruling party, the National Resistance Movement (NRM), may attempt to push through a bill that could end direct presidential elections.
According to him, under the constitutional amendment, the president would be selected by the parliament, effectively sidelining the people’s vote.
Kyagulanyi referred to this proposed change as a threat to Ugandan democracy.
“This could be the last opportunity for us to vote in a free and fair election. If we don’t vote for change now, it may be the last time we ever get to choose our president. They want to take that power away from you. But we can stop it,” he warned.
The NUP leader urged Ugandans to view the upcoming election as a chance to save Uganda from a political future of authoritarian rule thereby preserving the country’s democratic ideals.
He asked his supporters to take a stand by voting for NUP in the next general election. His remarks were met with cheers from the crowd, as he continued his campaign tour of eastern Uganda.
Kyagulanyi will finish his tour of the eastern region with a visit to Busia District before heading to the western Uganda subregion of Bunyoro next week.
