The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) continues to make a significant mark at the 2nd edition of the 2024 Africa Military Games (AMGA), with several Ugandan athletes securing various medals in the competition currently underway in Abuja, Nigeria.
Private Leonard Chemutai led the charge, scooping a silver medal in the 3000m steeplechase on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, with Kenya’s Simon Koich taking gold.
Chemutai emerged as an African Champion in the Men’s 3000m steeplechase in the African Athletics Championships, which took place in Cameroon in June 2024.
His latest accolade adds to the UPDF’s growing legacy in the sector of games, with the athletes from this force performing outstandingly well in different disciplines.
The UPDF has continued to take center stage in these games, with Private Cheptoyek Ruth and Sergeant Chebet Emily securing silver and bronze, respectively, in this year’s 42 km marathon, all having been secured last weekend in these Africa Military Games.

Cheptoyek finished with a time of 2:35:00, while Chebet clocked 2:38:00, with Tanzania’s Police Defence Forces (TPDF) team coming first to secure the gold medal.
The 2nd edition of the Africa Military Games officially kicked off on November 20, 2024, at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, Nigeria. This edition marks the return of the games after a 22-year break.
The Africa Military Games are designed to foster military cooperation, cultural exchange, and unity among African nations. A variety of sports events are taking place, including boxing, athletics, football, and shooting.
The games are expected to end on November 30, 2024, with teams competing for medals and glory.
