Police have arrested a woman who stole a vehicle registration number UAT 478N belonging to the Kigezi Diocese during the burial of the prominent businessman Apollo Nyegamehe commonly known as Aponye. The vehicle was stolen on Wednesday, July 12, 2023.

“The woman who stole a car Registration number UAT 478N at Aponye’s burial in Muganga was arrested at a road block in Rwampara by Uganda Police at 2200hrs,” Assistant Inspector General of Police (Rtd) Asan Kasingye said.

Reverend Canon Milton Nkurunungi, the Diocesan Secretary confirmed that the motor vehicle-Suzuki belongs to Kikungiri Archdeaconry based in Kabale Municipality Southern division under the diocese of Kigezi.

According to Nkurunungi, the vehicle disappeared during the burial service at the deceased’s ancestral home in Muhanga town council.

He further condemned such acts warning those who take advantage of grieving situations to show their bad manners.

Aponye’s burial was attended by thousands of people from different parts of the country including the politicians, spiritual leaders, and government officials, among others.

Aponye who was on Wednesday, July 12th, laid to rest at his ancestral home in Kitaburaza village, Muhanga town council in Rukiga district, died in a tragic accident on July 6, 2023, when his Land Cruiser with registration number UBF 300Z heading towards Kabale rammed into a stationary FUSO truck registration number UAZ 767D.

Police have since reported over two tragic accidents which have claimed lives of people including that of the Link bus driver, Dauda Kawawu who died on spot on July 11, 2023, at Katobiire between Rugombe and Mukunyu, along Kampala-Fort portal Road.

The Speaker Annet Anitah Among has on Thursday, July 13, 2023, chaired a meeting attended by officials from the Uganda National Roads Authority, Ministry of Works and Transport, Uganda Police, among others aimed at curbing the rampant road accidents.
