In a bid to provide safe, clean water to the populace, Kapelebyong district has partnered with Welt Hunger, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), to install a solar-powered water system in the Otungul rural growing centre, Akoromit sub-county.

While addressing stakeholders in an inception meeting on July 11, 2024, at the district council hall, Emmanuel Opus, the project coordinator for Teso and Karamoja, said that around Ugx 308 million has been allocated for the setting up of the Angaro solar-powered water system.

According to Opus, the project is funded by Charity Water with the expectation of serving over 240 households with a population of 2086 people.

“The main objective of this project is to improve access to clean water, safe sanitation, and hygiene practices in the Teso and Karamoja regions of Uganda,” Opus said.

Opus noted that the drilling of the production well has been completed and its water meets the required quality standards.

Isaac Odima, the district water officer for Kapelebyong, acknowledged that Welt Hunger has come to supplement the wash interventions in the district.

He further appreciated Welt Hunger for engaging different stakeholders at every stage of project implementation.

“The district has more communities to serve amidst the limited resource envelope. Welt Hunger has come to try to close the gap, and we appreciate your love, coordination, and support for our communities,” Odima said.

Augustine Peter Ojomi, the Assistant Resident District Commissioner, appreciated the district for providing an enabling environment for Welt Hunger to serve communities.

“Please, our chiefs, it’s your duty to sensitize communities to support the implementation of this project,” he said.

Welt Hunger has been operating in Kapelebyong since 2021. During the 2023/2024 financial year, it drilled 10 new boreholes and rehabilitated 16, among other interventions.
