The Vatican has appointed Archbishop Emmanuel Obbo of Tororo as the Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Jinja, just one day after the diocese mourned the passing of its beloved Bishop Charles Martin Wamika.
The announcement was made on Wednesday, 29th October, 2025, and the appointment takes effect immediately.
Bishop Wamika, who passed away on October 22nd, 2025, at the age of 70, was laid to rest at a solemn funeral Mass at St. Joseph Cathedral Rubaga in Jinja. Hundreds of clergy, faithful, and dignitaries attended, with Archbishop Obbo presiding over the Eucharistic celebration alongside bishops from across Uganda.
“His Grace Dr. Emmanuel Obbo has been appointed as the Apostolic Administrator of Jinja Diocese,” the Vatican statement read.
“This is a moment of profound transition for the Diocese of Jinja, but also one of hope.”
Born on October 7th, 1952, Archbishop Obbo brings decades of experience to the role.
Ordained a priest in the Assumptionists (A.J.), he served as Bishop of Soroti from 2007 until his elevation to Archbishop of Tororo in 2015.
Known for his pastoral warmth and dedication to interfaith dialogue, Obbo has been a unifying figure in eastern Uganda, providing guidance during times of community hardship, poverty, and health crises.
As Apostolic Administrator, Archbishop Obbo will oversee both the spiritual and administrative affairs of the Diocese of Jinja until Pope Leo XIV appoints a permanent successor.
The Diocese, established in 1947 and home to over 200,000 Catholics across Jinja City and the shores of Lake Victoria, looks to Obbo for continuity and steady leadership.
Pope Leo XIV, the first U.S.-born pontiff, elected in May 2025, continues to demonstrate decisive governance in episcopal appointments, ensuring that dioceses across the globe are guided by experienced shepherds.
In his first address as Apostolic Administrator, Archbishop Obbo is expected to celebrate Mass at St. Joseph Cathedral, inviting the faithful to embrace unity and hope under the vision of the Holy Father.
