The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party has denied allegations of campaign and election malpractices levied on them by opposing camps during the recently concluded Dokolo Woman MP by-elections.

The party said this during its weekly press release that took place on March 27, 2024, at the party headquarters in Uganda House, Kampala.

The party president, Jimmy Akena, congratulated their candidate, Sarah Aguti, for the well-deserved win in the Dokolo Woman MP By-election, stating that the UPC won because it had been on the ground mobilizing its voters.

The party president dismissed all talk of campaigning and election malpractices, stating that the party campaigned extensively for its candidate and did not have time to de-campaign or talk about other candidates.

“At no point did UPC attack any candidates, especially the daughter of the late Cecilia Ogwal, considering that she was still mourning the death of her mother. But also, when one joins politics, they should be prepared to attack and defend themselves and use whatever works for them to win an election,” Akena stated.

The party president also denied that UPC was involved in voter bribery, where one of the UPC MPs was picked up by police accusing him of bribing voters but was later released because there was no evidence to support the accusations.

“Among all the political parties that participated in the by-elections, UPC had the lowest budget. Bribing took place, but it was government officials, and to prove this, go and ask the people of Dokolo who gave the money.” He added

Sarah Aguti of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party is the new woman Member of Parliament for Dokolo, according to results released by the Uganda Electoral Commission. She had 23,044 votes, with the runner-up from the NRM polling only 14,001 votes.
