Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party has hailed the government for deploying 1901 medical interns, by the Ministry of Health (MOH), which was announced on July 27, 2023, by Dr. Henry Mwebesa, the Director General of Health Services.
Sharon Ayat Arach, the Spokesperson of UPC, while addressing the Press on August 2, 2023, at UPC party offices-Uganda House, said that there is a demand for an effective and functional health service system that requires improving standards in the health sector.
“This new deployment gives a great sigh of relief to both the interns and their parents or guardians. The government, through MOH, should ensure effective health services by providing enough medicine and equipment to hospitals and deploying more science professionals,” Arach said.
She added that, the monthly allowance of Ugx 1 million to medical Interns is a drop in the ocean and out of touch with reality as our prices of goods and services continue to rise day and night.
Arach called upon the government for an increment of allowances for medical interns, as they need to work in a conducive environment that is well facilitated since they need to transform from theory to real practical work.
“They need to fit into the hospital schedule and not be overworked, as it may kill their spirit prematurely. Therefore, whatever challenges they face should be handled in a professional manner as we avoid standoffs and encourage continuity of work,” Arach noted.
She further advised the MOH to drop the proposal of private sponsorship of medical interns and instead play its role accordingly.
