Ukraine’s parliament has voted decisively to appoint Yulia Svyrydenko, as the new prime minister concluding President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s largest cabinet reshuffle since the Russian invasion began in 2022.

Svyrydenko, a 39-year-old economist and former first deputy prime minister, won 262 votes in the 450-member legislature to succeed Denys Shmyhal, who resigned after more than five years in office.

She is the second woman to hold Ukraine’s top government post, following Yulia Tymoshenko.

Her appointment comes amid heightened wartime pressures and ongoing economic challenges.

The new government, widely viewed as loyal to President Zelenskyy, is expected to focus on boosting domestic arms production, strengthening economic resilience, and expediting key reforms.

The reshuffle also includes Zelenskyy’s proposal to move outgoing prime minister Shmyhal to the role of defense minister, while further parliamentary votes on remaining cabinet positions are anticipated soon.
