Police in Nakapiripirit District have initiated investigations after armed karimojong warriors attacked and killed two juvenile pokot herders, and injured another in a deadly cattle raid.

According to reports, the deceased were grazing their animals on January 11, 2025, when they were attacked by a group of suspected karimojong warriors armed with guns, bows and arrows.

The deceased include 14- year-old Lod, 16-year-old Pulukol and 18- year-old herdsman, Karimok who was injured at Pian-Upe game reserve in Loreng sub-county in Nakapiripirit District.

Further findings indicated that the Karimojong raiders stole over 500 heads of cattle, but 419 were recovered by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and the police anti stock theft unit.

Karimojong authorities strongly condemned the act saying the targeting innocent civilians including children is unacceptable and goes against the principles of humanity.

“We urge all parties involved to refrain from violence and work towards peaceful coexistence,” they said.

The authorities have since then initiated an investigation into the incident and are working closely with the UPDF to apprehend the perpetrators.

They are urging all communities in the region to remain and peaceful and advised the herders to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.

Cattle raids have been a problem in Uganda’s Karamoja region for years, and the situation is still complex.

Renewed cross border remains a major setback to both Uganda and Kenya and non governmental organizations in developing the pastoralist communities of the Karimojong and Sebei of Uganda and the the Turkana and Pokot of Kenya.
