The President emphasised the need to ensure that economic growth translates into improved household incomes, citing government programmes such as Operation Wealth Creation and the Parish Development Model (PDM).
“Can you have a strong army and a strong and safe country without a strong economy? Can you have a strong defence force and a strong and safe country without cohesive politics? Finally, can you have a strong defence force and a strong and safe country without, in some cases, addressing the issue of geo-strategic location such as being landlocked?” President Museveni asked.
Tanna’s mission to Nairobi reflects the commitment of both countries to strengthen their longstanding economic relationship. By addressing trade and industrial matters through direct dialogue, the two governments are seeking to ensure that disagreements over products, standards, or market access do not undermine the wider objective of regional integration.
The success of the Tenfold Growth Strategy, therefore, will not be measured by GDP figures alone. It will be seen in the number of businesses that grow, the industries that emerge, the products Uganda is able to export, the farmers who gain access to better markets and the jobs created for the country’s workforce.
