Omukama Edward Rukiidi Nyabongo I, a son to Prince Christopher Paul Kiijanangoma and a grandson of Omukama George David Kamurasi Rukiidi ascended to the throne on September 29th, 2026, after the death of his cousin King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV who succumbed to cancer at the age of 34 in the United states.
"It was Prince David Kiijanangoma who stood up to offer alternative leadership by declaring himself King of Tooro after seeing a big leadership gap created by then King Oyo who was mainly staying in Kampala and had become a visitor in his own Kingdom,” Irumba noted.
The dispute now places Tooro at a delicate crossroads between customary authority and Uganda’s legal framework. Omusuuga Kamurasi has called for respect for tradition and the law, while President Museveni has called for peace and unity among the Batooro.
The President said he later learnt from Queen Mother Best Kemigisa that Oyo had left behind a young boy who would eventually be presented to the public.
