The Uganda Police in a joint security operation with the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) and intelligence agencies, have arrested 122 individuals believed to be hardcore criminals terrorizing residents of the Kampala Metropolitan area.
The ongoing operation targeted known crime hotspots across the city saw these suspects apprehended on March 26, 2025.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SSP Patrick Onyango said the crackdown focused on areas including Wabiku, Balintuma Zone Kiwatule, Nakawa, Kungu, and Kireka Kamuli Road, responding to a surge in reports of robbery, assault, and other violent offenses.
“This intelligence-led operation aimed to dismantle criminal networks operating within the city,” Onyango stated.
Onyango mentioned that the first phase of the operation focused on black spots along the Northern Bypass, leading to the apprehension of 83 suspects and also impounded 10 motorcycles suspected of being used in criminal activities.
“These individuals are currently detained at Kira Road Police Station, where they are being processed for prosecution,” Onyango said.
In the similar security-led operations, a subsequent nighttime operation, commencing at 10:00 p.m., targeted Kungu and Kireka Kamuli Road, resulting in the arrest of 39 individuals suspected of robbery and assault in Kira Municipality and surrounding areas.
During the raids, law enforcement seized crucial evidence, including opium, a panga (machete), and a hammer, recovered from a temporary timber structure belonging to a suspect identified as Yanga. These items are believed to have been used in the commission of crimes.
One suspect, Gonzaga Peter, sustained an ankle injury while attempting to escape from police custody by jumping from a vehicle.
Onyango emphasized the security agencies’ unwavering commitment to safeguarding the city.
“These operations will continue to ensure that criminals do not have room to operate. We urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity,” he affirmed.
Police are also encouraging victims of crime in the affected areas to come forward with any information that may aid in the prosecution of these individuals. The arrested suspects are expected to face charges in court as investigations continue.
