Security operatives within the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) have arrested two civilians impersonating as UPDF officers in a joint security operation that was carried out in Kasangati, Wakiso district.

The two suspects were arrested on July 15, 2024, at Kasangati village after members of the public became suspicious of their actions.

According to Maj Charles Kabona, the spokesperson for the First Division of UPDF, the suspects, identified as Adam Ssentongo and his accomplice Hannington Ssekandi, were arrested after they were found in possession of a number of pieces of military equipment when the officers searched their home.

“Ssentongo was found in possession of military equipment, which was found after searching the suspects’ house, which included four pairs of uniforms, army shoes, UPDF ranks (captain to major), photos, toy pistols, and other military stores,” he said.

Maj Kabona added that Ssentongo has been involved in acts of land grabbing and offers protection to the culprits once arrested.

Maj Kabona explained that, as part of the prosecution, Ssentongo and his accomplice will be required to appear before a military court to answer as per Section 161 of the UPDF Act 2005. The duo is held at the UPDF army barracks in Kakiri as they await trial in the military court.
