The search for survivors continues after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit Morocco, killing more than 2,500 people, and at least 1,400 were injured while many others stayed missing. Several countries have come in to help.
An earthquake struck buildings and villages on Friday night of September 8, 2023, making it impossible to rescue the people who are still buried under the buildings.
The earthquake was the strongest to hit Morocco in more than 120 years.
Despite many people still buried under buildings, locals have managed to rescue people, as the search to help those still trapped beneath some buildings continues.
Morocco’s Interior Ministry stated on Sunday, September 9, 2023, that after assessing the situation, it decided to accept assistance from several foreign governments.
The foreign states that have come in include; Spain, Qatar, the United Kingdom, and the United Arab Emirates, which have already mobilized groups of search and rescue teams.
However, the locals continue to say that it’s really difficult to access the massive earthquake-hit area, especially Moulay Brahim, similar to many other villages in the region.
The roads are winding and narrow, and some of the paths have large stones that dropped from the steep slopes during the earthquake, partially blocking them, according to CNN.
Preliminary reports indicate that, dozens of tents have been provided as shelter to survivors houses were destroyed during the quake. However, emergency camps have been set up in many places to help people with food and medical attention.
In the same case, many Moroccan players have decided to donate blood in case it is needed by the casualties after the devastating earthquake, while others like Christian Ronaldo has offered his hotel in Morocco to be used.
King Mohamed VI expressed his condolences to all the families who had lost loved ones in the accident during the meeting that was focused on the aftermath of the tragic earthquake.
He also asked all mosques across the country to hold funeral prayers known as janazah, and flags should be flown at half mast in the whole country.
