Protestors at River Muzizi-Karalikye in Nyanseke-Muhooro Town Council have set fire on a truck and blocked the Kyenjojo-Kagadi road over a fatal accident that occurred on Sunday, July 16, 2023, at around 7:30pm leaving 16 people dead.

According to eye witnesses at the scene, a truck that was loaded with fish and collided with a taxi around River Muzizi is still at the scene with bodies underneath. This has infuriated residents and suspected family members of the accident victims to set the trailer on fire.

Residents are blaming the authorities and Police for not responding after the accident occurred.

Muhamad Mulumba, one of the eye witnesses appealed to the authorities and Police to handle the matter before it runs out of hand since the road is currently blocked and protesters have already set the trailer on fire.

“I appeal to all leaders, the RDC, Chairman LCV, DPC, and DISO to come to Muzizi and see what’s happening because the road is blocked and movement of vehicles is halted. The bodies are still in the vehicles, people have already set the trailer on fire, and on the road itself which is damaging it,” Mulumba noted.

The eye witnesses said that the Police officers on ground are guarding the fish loaded on the truck instead of helping residents to remove the bodies that are still stuck underneath the vehicle.

“What is hurting us is, none of the authorities has reached the scene since yesterday and the Police on ground are just protecting the boss’ goods,” an eye witness said.

The Police from Kagadi composing of five officers have arrived at the scene and retaliated against protestors to calm the situation.

Residents have accused Police of responding without any breakdown or fire brigade but shooting. They also said that the taxi which was involved in the accident was recovered by residents themselves.

However, according to Peter Mugisa Ssebugwawo, the Vice Chairperson LCV of Kagadi district who later arrived at the scene, the bodies are still under the truck and they are waiting for a breakdown to remove the vehicle.

He called upon locals to remain calm, adding that Police is in control and vehicles which were stuck in jam as a result of road blockage have started moving.

In an accident that occurred around River Muzizi in Nyanseke-Muhooro Town Council, Kagadi district, only five people survived and are receiving treatment at Muhooro Community Centre and Kagadi Hospital. The victims who were residents of Kagadi were traveling from burial in Fort-Portal. The driver was identified as Henry Acaali.
