Uganda will observe three days of mourning for the late King of Tooro, Ikingura (late King) Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni ordering an official burial and directing that national flags be flown at half-mast.

The directive comes as the death of the 34-year-old monarch leaves the Tooro Kingdom mourning and facing an early succession question, after Museveni revealed that Oyo left behind a young son who is expected to be introduced publicly as his heir at an appropriate time.

In a condolence message issued on Saturday, August 29th, 2026, after the King’s death, Museveni described Ikingura Oyo’s death at such a young age as a loss to both Tooro and Uganda.

“He was orphaned while still young and he has died young. How unfair life can be!” Museveni said.

Oyo, who became king as a child, died in the United States after battling an aggressive form of cancer.

Museveni said the government had supported the royal family in seeking treatment abroad, first in Germany and later in the United States.

“Some months back, Her Royal Highness Kemigisa, Nyinomukama, came to tell me that the Muzzukulu Oyo had cancer that was very aggressive. The Government supported them to go to Germany and, then, the USA where he died,” Museveni said.

The President said he later learnt from Queen Mother Best Kemigisa that Oyo had left behind a young boy who would eventually be presented to the public.

“Fortunately, in a telephone call, Her Royal Highness Kemigisa told me that H.H. Oyo left a young boy heir that will be introduced to the public at the right time,” he noted.

The revelation gives the mourning period another dimension, with the royal family expected to determine how and when the young heir will be presented as Tooro prepares for life after Oyo.

Museveni also praised the late King’s relationship with the central government, saying Ikingura Oyo had shown potential to work with both central and local authorities in efforts to develop Tooro.

“In the short life on earth, he had shown that he had potential of working well with the Central and Local Governments to develop Tooro,” he stated.

The President used Ikingura Oyo’s record of cooperation with government to caution cultural leaders against using restored cultural institutions to promote sectarianism.

“H.H. Oyo worked well with the Central Government, thereby avoiding the mistake of trying to use the Cultural Institutions that were restored by the NRM to promote sectarianism,” Museveni said.

“For the royal family and the people of Tooro, however, the immediate concern is mourning a king whose life was marked by an unusual burden: inheriting a centuries-old institution while still a child and dying before reaching middle age,” he added.

Museveni directed that Ikingura Oyo be accorded an official burial and that flags be flown at half-mast for three days: the day before the burial, the burial day and the day after.

The directive places the national mourning period alongside a deeply personal loss for a royal family that has now lost a king who spent much of his life carrying the responsibilities of the Tooro throne.

The future of the kingdom will, in time, turn to the young heir whose existence Museveni has confirmed, but for now the focus remains on mourning Oyo and honouring his life.

“May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Museveni said.
