The Uganda Police is mourning the unexpected death of one of their members, Commissioner of Police (CP) Godfrey Maate, the Zonal Commander for the Greater Masaka Region.
CP Maate died on Sunday night after collapsing on duty in Sango Bay, Kyotera District. He was taken to the clinic for treatment where he was pronounced dead.
“We sadly announce the death of Commissioner of Police Maate Godfrey, Commander of Sango Bay Police operations. He passed away yesterday in Kyotera District,” Uganda Police said in a post on X this morning.
CP Maate was appointed by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abas Byakagaba in July 2025, to oversee security during the 2025/26 General Election. He was an experienced police officer, capable and exemplary in his duties, and a respectable officer both in the police and the public sphere.
A dedicated officer who had risen through the ranks from humble beginnings, CP Maate began his career in the Uganda Police Force as a constable, before gradually advancing to the post of commissioner. He was committed, a service–leader from the beginning, when he was among the very first officers to be trained at the Jinja Military School in 1998.
He graduated with notable officers such as Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba and Assistant Inspector General of Police John Ndungutse.
The Police is yet to issue a statement. Funeral Arrangements will be communicated.
