The police have issued a warning to parents about their tendency to drop their children off at school or on boda bodas without the supervision of an elder during the early hours of 5-6 am.

The police spokesperson, ACP Ktuuma Rusoke, while addressing the media during the weekly security brief at Naguru police headquarters on Monday, September 16, 2024, sensitized the public on child neglect by parents who don’t attend to their children while dropping them to school and picking them home.

Rusoke noted that some parents leave their children walk alone to school at the early hours of 5-6 am, while others leave them to move on boad-bodas without being accompanied by an elder person, more so without bike gear on them.

“Some of our parents transfer the responsibility of dropping and picking children without educating maids who remain careless by letting children walk at the side where vehicles are passing, attracting a child to being hooked by motor vehicles or boda bodas, leading to accidents. Besides that, these maids do not reach these children into the gates of schools and ensure that children have entered,” Rusoke said.

He added that some of the parents who drive usually drop their children and let them out of cars to find their way to school; they drive off without seeing if a child has entered school.

“You parents have to invest time in your children by ensuring that you drop them off at school and ensure to see that they have entered the school before leaving the gate of that school, and if you have tight programs, educate your caretakers and children on the safety while going to school and coming back home,’’ Rusoke added.

Uganda Police has assured the public of their commitment to ensuring safety and called for emphasis on vigilance and cooperation in order to ensure a crime-free environment that benefits citizens for the betterment of the country.
