The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) ranger has been shot dead at the hands of armed poachers while on duty at Kidepo Valley National Park.

According to a statement by the Authority on November 5, 2024, Jonathan Pte Olara, who was stationed in Kidepo Valley Conservation Area (KVCA), was fatally shot on November 4, 2024, during an encounter with armed poachers while on patrol within the Karenga Community Wildlife Area.

UWA mourned Pte Olara, noting that the incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers involved in conservation work and the courage of the men and women who defend wildlife and natural heritage.

“UWA’s mission is to conserve and protect Uganda’s precious wildlife resources. The risks our staff face daily in the field, particularly in areas prone to illegal wildlife activities, demonstrate the critical importance of the rangers’ role in safeguarding these national treasures,” UWA noted.

“His courageous service and commitment to protecting Uganda’s wildlife will be deeply missed. As we mourn this tremendous loss, our thoughts and prayers are with Pte Olara Jonathan’s family and loved ones,” UWA added.

The Authority pledged to intensify their efforts in combating poaching and other illegal activities that threaten Uganda’s wildlife and ecosystems.

“We stand firm in our resolve to protect our conservation areas and shall continue to work with the local communities, the local government authorities, and conservation partners in protecting wildlife and the integrity of its habitats for the benefit of all Ugandans,” the Authority stated.
