The National Unity Platform (NUP) has announced the official launch of its nationwide youth elections campaign, set to take place on Saturday, June 7, 2025, in a bid to secure more youth leadership positions across the country.
While addressing journalists at the NUP headquarters on Thursday, June 5, 2025, the party’s Secretary General, David Lewis Rubongoya, urged supporters across Uganda to turn out in large numbers and back NUP flag bearers in the upcoming youth elections.
“We have encouraged our people to launch the youth elections campaign this Saturday. We want all our young people to come together, and we hope the police will not frustrate us in our activities,” Rubongoya said.
He confirmed that the party had officially notified the Uganda Police Force about the planned activities, expressing hope that security agencies would act professionally.
“I have a letter here that was received by Uganda Police, and we hope they will allow us to proceed with our countrywide launch as agreed,” Rubongoya added.
NUP Vice President for Northern Uganda, Lina Zedriga, also made a rallying call to women within the party to take advantage of the ongoing nomination process and offer themselves for leadership roles.
“I have been updated by the Election Management Committee about the number of people picking nomination forms. I want to call upon fellow women to come forward and get nominated. We cannot continue to complain if we are leaving the space to only men,” Zedriga said.
Meanwhile, Zaake Francis, Member of Parliament for Mityana Municipality and chairperson of the NUP Youth Wing, appealed to the Electoral Commission to provide access to the official youth voter registers to facilitate proper mobilization.
“We call upon the Electoral Commission to provide us with the youth registers so we can know who will be part of the elections,” he said.
The youth elections are scheduled for June 19, 2025, and are expected to be highly competitive. Unlike previous years, where the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) dominated the process, this year’s elections have seen increased interest and mobilization from opposition parties, including NUP, as they seek to make significant gains in youth representation.
