In a significant political shift, the National Unity Platform (NUP) has officially dismissed Mathias Mpuuga Mpanga, the Member of Parliament for Nyendo-Mukungwe Municipality, from his position as NUP deputy President Buganda Region.

Mpuuga, who had previously served as the Leader of Opposition in Parliament has been replaced by Muwanga Muhammad Kivumbi, a prominent Ugandan economist and politician, as the acting representative for the party.

In the presence of top leadership on January 16, 2025, NUP Secretary General, David Lewis Rubongoya made the announcement during a press briefing at the party headquarters at Kavule Makerere in Kampala City.

The decision to remove Mpuuga follows allegations of mismanagement during his tenure as the Leader of Opposition.

Sources within the party claim that Mpuuga’s handling of his office led to growing concerns among party members, contributing to the leadership shake-up.

In addition to the changes regarding Mpuuga, NUP also filled other vacant positions within the party, signalling a broader reshuffling in the leadership ranks as below

1.National Consultative Forum Vice Chairperson is now comrade Benjamin Katana who replaces the deceased Maama Jolly Mugisha

  1. Deputy Secretary for Youth in Western region is now Bwambale Geoffrey who replaces Aguuda Moses
  2. Secretary for the Eldery formerly occupied by the late Mzee Byarugaba William is now occupied by Rev. Dr. Ben
  3. Secretary for Policy formerly occupied by the deceased Simon Toolit will now be occupied by Harriet Ageno
  4. Secretary for PWDs formerly occupied by Isabirye is now occupied by Mr. Julius Maganda
  5. Deputy President for Western Uganda formerly occupied by Maama Jolly Mugisha (RIP) will be replaced by Jolly Jackline Tukamushaba
  6. Deputy president for Buganda is Muwanga Kivumbi who replaces Hon. Mathias Mpuuga who left the party following his suspension

The party has expressed confidence that these changes will strengthen NUP and provide a fresh direction as it continues its mission to challenge the current political status quo in Uganda.
