The Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Joel, has told the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among, to refrain from using the Parliamentary Commission as her personal kiosk (shop).

Ssenyonyi said he has been barred from attending Commission meetings by the Speaker.

On Wednesday, June 12, 2024, while addressing the media at Parliament, he urged the police to expand their investigation into the Commission.

LoP Ssenyonyi accused the Speaker of spending money on corporate social responsibility, yet several committees are unable to fulfill their monitoring responsibilities due to a shortage of funding.

“Let Parliament work as an institution, but not someone’s small kiosk or small property because. Billions of dollars are running on different accounts for personal work, and yet committees don’t have money to operate,” said Ssenyonyi.

He vowed not to relent against fighting corruption in public institutions.

“I am not going to keep quiet about it, and I will not allow somebody to intimidate me because I am not here at the invitation of anybody. I was voted by the people of Nakawa West; nobody in this building invited me,” said bitter Ssenyonyi.

He said that while some MPs are being arrested, there is a need to broaden the investigation of the Parliament, beginning with the Parliamentary Commission, because that is where lots of things are happening.

“So the tendency for the Parliamentary Commission to operate clandestinely without the members of the Commission raises a lot of suspicion, and this has got to be addressed,” he added.
