National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu is set to conclude his campaign tour of the Busoga subregion today, with final rallies scheduled in Bugiri and Namayingo districts.

Speaking to the press on Saturday, September 4, 2025, at Brisk Recreation Hotel in Jinja, Kyagulanyi urged his supporters to remain peaceful and avoid confrontations with security forces.

“Today we conclude our Busoga campaigns, and I call upon all supporters to remain calm even when the police attempt to disrupt us. We refuse to be violent. We are running a peaceful campaign and will expose the unlawful actions of the police,” Kyagulanyi said.

He accused police of persistently denying him access to town centers throughout his Busoga tour, which he described as illegal and discriminatory.

“Blocking us is illegal and unfair, but it has also allowed us to show the world the real face of Busoga, the dilapidated schools, dusty roads, and widespread poverty. Even when our journeys took hours instead of minutes, we saw the true state of the region,” he added.

NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya also criticized the police, particularly in Iganga, where authorities reportedly refused to allow a rally in the municipality, instead offering a remote location.

“The police made it clear they didn’t want us in Iganga municipality because of the large crowds. But we reminded them it’s not a crime to attract numbers,” Rubongoya said.

He further revealed that NUP has petitioned the Electoral Commission (EC) to clarify whether it is legal for the party to be barred from campaigning in towns and cities where other candidates have been allowed.

“We’ve written to the EC and shared a copy with the police. By Monday, they will have received it. We want clarity; are there areas where only NUP is not allowed to campaign?” Rubongoya stated.

As Kyagulanyi wraps up his Busoga campaign, no incidents of violence; clashes with security forces, no teargas, no riots, and no arrests have been reported, .

Next, Kyagulanyi will head to the Buganda subregion for the second leg of his campaign, beginning in Mityana, Mubende, Kyankwanzi, Kassanda, Kiboga, and Nakaseke districts.
