The Kampala Metropolitan Police is investigating circumstances under which a security guard belonging to Gibion Security Systems shot dead his colleague from the same company.

ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Police Spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan, said that the shooting incident happened on December 27, 2023, in the morning at about 8 a.m.

This follows a report the police received from Robert Okiro, the Managing Director of Gibion Security Systems, saying that one of his security guards, identified as Lottiani Robert, 25, a resident of Sebbowa village, Kiwatule in Nakawa division, while inspecting his rifle, discharged the bullet that shot Emmanuel Jilong, 23 years of age, in the stomach and later succumbed to the injuries.

Police said that, after interviewing Lottiani, he had no experience with the gun, yet he was deployed last night.

“Upon interviewing the suspect, he attested that he has no experience in using a gun, but he was deployed last night with a gun, and he had also intimated to a friend after he had failed to return the gun to the armory. While he was doing NSP, the bullet was discharged up to Ojilong,” Owoyesigyire said.

Owoyesigyire noted that the police are going to do an investigation and will also go into the statements that have been made by the suspect to ascertain whether the security guards are trained before being given rifles.

This is not the first time this year that security guards from the same security firm have mishandled their arms. On May 13, 2023, John Mujumbi, a 25-year-old security guard, shot dead his colleague and roommate, Peter Ochoroi, 26, in Makindye, Uganda.
