Residents of Kabale Municipality are planning to peacefully march to their area UMEME offices in protest against frequent power outages.

According to the protest organizers, the march is slated to take place on August 10, 2024, and they will convene at Kabale Stadium at 10 a.m. and proceed to UMEME offices.

The protesters key demands are transparent billing, reliable power supply, and prompt customer service.

According to residents, they have complained to UMEME a number of times; however, their grievances seem to be falling on deaf ears.

”Locals are complaining that for a long period of time, Kabale town residents have been facing frequent power blackouts and inconsistencies in billing, and this has affected their businesses and their day-to-day lives. However, all our efforts have been in vain,” one of the organizers said.

The organizers said they will march to visit Kabale police station offices to seek clearance before August 4.

Protest organizers assert that they are not against UMEME as a company but rather, want to hold them accountable for the services they provide.

This comes at a time when youth in Kampala are marching to parliament in  protest against corruption in Uganda.
